LED therapy

Acne is one of the most common diseases in the field of dermatology. It is localised mainly in the region of the face which causes aesthetic problems. It is a polyetiological disease of the sebaceous follicles in the areas rich in sebaceous glands. It manifests with seborrhoea, disrupted keratinisation of the follicles with formation of comedones and subsequent inflammatory papules, pustules, nodular abscesses and cicatrices.

Acne therapy should provide anti-seborrhoeic, anti-microbial, and anti-comedone effect. Treatment is a long process and requires patience from the doctor and the patient.

LED therapy is a contemporary method for treatment of mild to moderate forms of acne. A special nozzle emits light at specific wavelength of the visible spectrum.

The blue light (415 nm) has a strong anti-bacterial effect. It reaches deep into the pores where the usual habitat of Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria causing inflammation, is situated. They produce protoporphyrins that absorb the blue light and release free oxygen radicals. Radicals, in turn, lead to destruction of bacteria.

Red light (633 nm) has a healing effect on the acne because it stimulates the healing process and provides skin relief. It increases the inflow of blood and oxygen and results in the synthesis of new collagen.

LED therapy may be used as the main form of treatment and can be combined with another therapy if necessary. This procedure does not involve any risks and is completely painless. Eight procedures performed twice a week are required. The duration of LED therapy is 30 minutes.
